Summary: Major-, trace- and REE characteristics of Mid-Atlantic Ridge basalts and diabase (Holes 519A, 520 and 522B) are typical of N- type MORB and are consistent with variable degrees of low-P fractionation of olivine, spinel and plagioclase prior to eruption. Upper basalts and diabase on the south flank of the Walvis Ridge (Hole 524) are alkaline, chemically similar to lavas at Tristan da Cunha, supporting an interpretation of the Walvis Ridge as a line of hot-spot alkaline volcanoes. Whole-rock chemical analyses and CIPW norms are given for 37 tholeiites and 7 alkaline rocks. REE data are given for 13 of the rocks.
