Summary: | The whole-rock basalt samples from the upper part of the hole have oxygen isotope compositions typical of mid-ocean basalts which have been altered at low T by sea-water. Samples from the lower part of the hole show only slight O-isotope alteration. The water/rock ratio is more important than T variation, as suggested by delta 18O values compared with 87Sr/86Sr. |
